In several developing countries, drug & alcohol testing is seen as a person’s right to privacy. Basically, it is the US that accounts major share in drug screening market. However, Asian market is also escalating due to –

  • Increase in the number of drug addicts
  • Increase in vehicle base escalates the possibilities of car accidents because of DUI
  • Rise in awareness about alcohol screening
  • Increase in disposable incomes

Application of drug & alcohol testing

  • Schools & workplace
  • Hospitals
  • Law enforcement agencies
  • Drug treatment centers
  • Personal users
  • Pain management centers
  • Drug testing laboratories

For onsite testing

  • Results are offered in maximum ten minutes
  • Easy to use
  • Professionals or certified personnel are not needed
  • Tests can identify drugs categorized under NIDA-5 and some can detect ten new substances categorized recently as drug abuse issues

Different kinds of onsite testing

Urine tests

  • No instruments are needed
  • Fast & easy to administer
  • Cup style or testing strips help to eliminate adulteration
  • Binding immunoassay method is used
  • A special mixture of antibody dye mixes with urine and migrates on a porous membrane
  • If concentration is within limits set by DHHA and SAMHSA then the lines appear along premarket areas on the test strip
  • It concentration is at or more than said limits then the positive results get displayed on different area on the control bands

Saliva test

  • Testing strip with a porous membrane is placed in the mouth
  • Immunoassay method similar to urine test is applied
  • Unlike urine test, there is hardly any space for adulteration in saliva test

Sweat test

  • Sweat patch is attached, so as to absorb sufficient amount of sweat produced by the body
  • Immunoassay method is applied to determine the existence of drug

Drawback of onsite drug testing

The only drawback of urine test is that it is a biological hazard (human waste) and needs proper disposal necessary for infectious waste. Disposal of saliva and sweat strip is simple but can be infectious if it harbors and spreads viruses and diseases. Therefore it is necessary to handle disposal as per DHHA approved methods.

Drug testing laboratories

Hair and blood tests are conducted in a laboratory. Actually, blood and hair samples need to be collected in special containers. Along with these stored samples, custody documents are needed by law from every one handling like the technician, who collected the sample, transportation, and testing personal. It ensures high accuracy of results, which is impossible with simple on-site testing.

Drug test kit versus laboratory

Employers prefer on-site drug testing more because in laboratory test the employee has to leave their workplace, which leads to transport cost and loss of production. Cost of drug tests kits is significantly less than laboratory charges. However, there is a disagreement about accuracy between the results of test kids and laboratory process.

In case of suspicious results there are detectors that tell if the sample to be tested is adulterated or not. If necessary, you can further get more detailed analysis through blood and hair sample in the lab.
